You’ve got your color match and the answer to “What color should I dye my hair?” Quiz results showed you which color will be the best fit for you and gave you a few shade options to choose from based on your skin undertones. So what’s next? There are a few more things you should know before you settle on your next color.

  • Make sure you know your undertones. You might think you have warm undertones, but have you actually checked? Try the jewelry test with a piece of silver jewelry and a piece of gold jewelry. Put each on and determine which looks best against your skin. If it’s silver, you’re cool-toned. If it’s gold, you’re warm-toned. If you honestly can’t decide because both look great, you’re neutral-toned and can choose both cool and warm hair color shades!
  • Get out of your comfort zone – comfortably. Maybe your results said red, but you’re not quite ready to tackle blazing copper red just yet. So take baby steps and try a medium brown with auburn or copper tones mixed in! Or if blonde is your recommendation but you’re not thrilled with the thought of bleaching roots every 4 weeks, try a dark blonde balayage look instead to leave your roots unbleached. If you love a color, there’s always a flattering way to do it!
  • Leave bleaching to a professional. If you plan to DIY your new hair color and are going lighter, take our advice and leave the bleaching to a professional. It’s totally possible to bleach your hair at home – here’s our How to Bleach Your Hair in 7 Steps guide – but it’s also very easy to mess up. We want you to love your new color, not seek expensive color correction services or damage your locks because of it. Leave bleaching to a pro and stick to single-process colors for DIY!
  • Properly maintain your color. If you take good care of your new color from the start, it’ll last up to a few weeks longer and stay vibrant. You’ll need a sulfate-free, color safe shampoo (and try not to wash your hair more than 2-3 times a week). Wash with warm, not hot, water to avoid lifting your hair’s cuticle and releasing more color with each shampoo. You can also try pigmented conditioners and toning shampoos to keep your color in top-notch shape!
