How Much Does a Haircut Cost?

A person looking up at hair supplies for a piece on how much does a haircut cost

If you’re due for a trim or cut, you might be wondering, “How much does a haircut cost?” We surveyed salons across the nation to find the average prices for men’s and women’s haircuts.

Costs across the board have risen due to inflation. From 2021 to 2022, prices increased a little more than 5%. That’s not great news for your wallet, but staying informed on average haircut prices will help reduce sticker shock at the salon.

Haircuts typically reflect inflation quickly since salon owners and stylists can easily adjust their prices as the costs for labor, equipment, products, and services in general rise.

Overall, we found that the nationwide average price range for a haircut is $56. Women’s cuts are around $69 and men’s are about $43 on average.

Less expensive haircuts are offered in small towns and chain salons while higher-priced cuts are at high-end and independent salons in larger cities.

But the end result depends on a few factors. These include:

  • The salon and stylist you choose
  • How thick/curly your hair is
  • Your location
  • The type of cut you’re getting

You’d be surprised at how much haircut costs differ from city to city! To get a good sense of the overall average cost, we looked at salon prices in each state’s biggest city.

To answer the question how much does a haircut cost, a graphic version of the US showing an illustration of the average haircut price in each state of the US

Before we get into the average cost by city, take a look at some of the interesting haircut cost trends we found:

  • The average price for a haircut across all the cities in our survey is $56. Women’s haircuts cost more at $69 on average. Men’s haircuts are slightly cheaper at $43 on average.
  • The price of a haircut today ($56) is up 5-6% from 2020’s average haircut cost ($53) due to inflation.
  • The average price of a women’s haircut is $69. You’ll pay closer to $39 at low-end salons and $93 at high-end salons.
  • The average price of a men’s haircut is now $43. You’ll pay closer to $25 for a haircut at low-end barber shops and $48 for high-end barber shops.
  • Men’s haircuts are usually at least $10 to $20 less than women’s haircuts. In some cities, the difference is as much as $60.
  • Salons in the most populated cities – New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston – tend to charge more for haircuts than the less populated cities (but there are a few exceptions to the rule).
  • Only seven cities on our list had an average haircut cost of $100 or more. Most hovered in the $40-$70 range.
  • The city with the lowest average haircut cost is Omaha, Nebraska with an average cost of $31. Boise had the next lowest cost, with an average haircut cost of $34. Look at chain shops across the country for pricing closer to these industry lows.

Most of the salons we surveyed included a shampoo and style with the cost of a haircut. Check with your salon to see if these services are included!

How Much Does a Haircut Cost on Average?

Graphic titled Average Haircut Price with an average men's haircut price, average women's haircut price, and national overall average

Now that we’ve looked at the average prices for haircuts in cities across America, let’s drill it down a little further. What’s the nationwide average price for a haircut in the U.S.?

  • The nationwide average price for a men’s haircut is $43.
  • The nationwide average price for a women’s haircut is $69.
  • The nationwide average price for a haircut (men’s or women’s) is $56.

Most of the salons we surveyed did include a shampoo, haircut, blow dry, and simple style in the cost of their haircuts.

If these prices seem a little higher than you were expecting, know that you’ll likely get more than just a haircut for the price you pay.

Haircut Cost After Inflation

Inflation has led to price increases in categories across the board, from milk and eggs to gas and – you guessed it – haircuts.

Haircut costs after inflation have risen steadily in the past few years. Haircut inflation rates are lower than general inflation for all items. Haircuts have seen a 5.16% rise in cost since 2020 compared to the overall 4.81% inflation rate.

The Wall Street Journal found that inflation rates are more quickly reflected in the price of haircuts as salon owners and independent stylists are able to increase their rates to keep with rising inflation costs.

Haircut costs are a good indicator of economic health as much of the price is rooted in labor costs.

A barber or salon owner might need to raise the pay for employees to compete with increased wages at fast food restaurants, hotels, and other service industries. Those pay increases are reflected in the final cost of a haircut.

So what are average haircut costs after inflation looking like these days?

While the nationwide average cost for a haircut (men and women’s) was around $53 in 2020, it’s up to about $56 now.

Women’s haircuts have taken the hardest hit since they’re typically priced higher than men’s cuts. The cost for a woman’s haircut has risen from about $66 on average in 2020 to $69 on average now.

And although they’re typically much less expensive than women’s cuts, men’s haircuts haven’t been immune to inflation, either. A men’s haircut cost an average of $40 in 2020, but is up to $43 on average now.

While the ~5% inflation rate for haircuts may not seem like much, the dollars and cents add up over time. In certain areas heavily impacted by inflation, the haircut cost increases can be much higher than these averages.

Also consider how the higher haircut cost also affects the recommended tip amount, which usually ranges from 15% to 20% of the service total.

All in all, you may spend an additional $10-$20+ on your haircut this year with inflation and tip increases considered.

Things to Consider

Against a blue background sits the You Probably Need a Haircut salon locator tool

There are a couple more important things to consider, too. The salons we surveyed are located in the most populous cities in each state, so their prices may not reflect the average salon price in smaller cities.

The average prices for haircuts in your city might be much less than those listed here.

Another thing to keep in mind: The salons we surveyed were also independent salons, not franchise salons. Franchise salons like Great Clips, Sport Clips, and Supercuts all have much lower pricing than what’s listed here. You can check out pricing for these salons here:
